Rogue River Wild Section

One of the original eight rivers designated Wild and Scenic in 1968, the Rogue's 84-mile Wild section cuts through the remote Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon in emerald-green silence — broken only by Class III–IV+ rapids that have been drawing paddlers for generations. The put-in at Grave Creek marks the end of the road; from there, the canyon swallows you whole.

Over three to five days, the river delivers the full range: long flatwater glides past old-growth Douglas fir, then the technical squeeze of Mule Creek Canyon, and the mandatory scout at Blossom Bar — a boulder garden considered the defining test of the trip. Private lodges and a handful of BLM camps dot the corridor, giving multiday groups flexibility on where to stop. The Rogue River Trail parallels the entire route for hikers following along or shuttling out on foot.

The control season runs May 15 through October 15, when launches require a permit obtained through Recreation.gov's annual permit draw. Applications open December 1 and close January 31. Self-issued permits cover the off-season window (October 16 – May 14), when flows are higher and the canyon is yours with far less competition.
